What Is A Dental Bridge?

Missing teeth can cause low self-esteem, increase pressure on the surrounding teeth and can alter the way your teeth bite together. One solution to filling the gap between your teeth is a Dental Bridge.

This is a long term solution which will give you the ability to confidently smile, and to eat well.  Dental Bridges will match and blend in in with your existing teeth, meaning this is a discreet treatment option.

Types of Dental Bridge

  • Conventional Fixed Bridge – This involves placing dental crowns on the supporting teeth either side of a gap and the replacement tooth is fixed in between them. Made with porcelain bonded to metal or all ceramic, depending on need, the traditional dental bridge is a superb design that is made to be fixed permanently and cannot be removed as you would be able to with a partial denture
  • Resin Retained Bridge – Also fixed, this permanent bridge is cemented to one tooth next to the gap, usually the rearmost, and may include a little support to sit on the tooth in front
  • Implant Supported Dental Bridge – This bridge is supported by dental implants as opposed to natural teeth. A dental implant is made of two parts. One replaced the root of the tooth, which is the actual implant and the other part, which is the tooth like part, is the crown. This type of bridge, therefore, is the perfect solution for multiple missing teeth as it can replace 3 or 4 missing teeth with only two dental implants. This allows the crowns to connect to each other to form one piece

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a dental bridge last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, a well-fitted dental bridge can last 10 to 15 years or longer. The supporting teeth need to remain healthy, which is why routine hygiene appointments and check-ups are so important.

Does getting a dental bridge hurt?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel any pain during treatment. Some mild sensitivity around the area is normal for a few days afterwards and usually settles quickly.

Can I eat normally with a dental bridge?

Yes – once fitted and settled, a dental bridge restores normal eating function. We recommend avoiding very hard or excessively sticky foods directly on the bridge to protect its longevity.

How do I care for my dental bridge?

Caring for a bridge is straightforward but important for its long-term success. Brush twice daily as normal, and use a floss threader or super floss to clean underneath the bridge where your standard toothbrush cannot reach. Regular hygiene appointments are essential – our hygienists use the latest Airflow technology to remove any build-up around the bridge that home cleaning alone cannot address.
