Do I need a Check Up before a Hygienist Appointment?

Patients will require a check up within 12 months preceeding a hygiene appointment, and the Dentist will write a prescription for Hygiene treatment if it is required.  During the check up appointment, the dentist carries out a full examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues, checks for decay or other concerns, and then refers you to the hygienist if needed.

However, we also offer Direct Access appointments with our Dental Therapist.

This means you can book directly for hygiene treatment without first seeing a dentist.

What is Direct Access?

Direct Access allows you to book an appointment with our Dental Therapist without first seeing a dentist.

This means you can attend for professional cleaning, gum health treatment, stain removal and preventative care directly, making it quicker and more convenient to look after your oral health.

Because your appointment is with a Dental Therapist, they are trained to:

  • Carry out a clinical assessment of your teeth and gums including X-Rays where necessary

  • Diagnose common conditions such as gum disease and small cavities

  • Provide hygiene treatment and gum therapy

  • Treat small cavities with fillings where appropriate

  • Offer preventative advice and maintenance planning

If more complex treatment is required — such as crowns, root canal treatment, extractions or advanced restorative care — you will be referred to one of our dentists.

Please note that while your Dental Therapist can assess and diagnose within their scope of practice, a Direct Access appointment does not replace a comprehensive examination with a dentist. Regular dental examinations are still recommended to maintain long-term oral health.

Direct Access is ideal if you:

  • Would like a professional clean or Airflow stain removal

  • Are concerned about bleeding gums

  • Haven’t seen a dentist recently but would like to start with a hygiene visit

If you’re unsure whether Direct Access is right for you, our team will be happy to guide you.

How Often Should I visit my Dental Hygienist?

How often you visit our dental hygienist here in Bath will depend on the overall health of your teeth and gums.  We’ll let you know how often we recommend you visit our dental hygienist during your regular check-up.

We are fully dedicated to the Airflow system which produces consistently high results in a comfortable fashion.
