Dental Filling Information

Our bodies can be quite amazing when it comes to the ability to repair injured structures. When we break our bones for example, our body can create new cells which heal the bone back together. But sadly with our teeth this doesn’t happen and damage that occurs to a tooth can’t be “healed” back to normal. Once a hole (cavity) forms in a tooth, it can only get worse until the tooth has to be removed. However, what we can do is clean the tooth and fill the cavity with a tooth-like substance called composite to prevent cavities getting worse, this is also known as a white filling.

Fillings can restore a damaged tooth back to its normal shape in a simple and effective manner and there are a variety of different materials that can be used as dental fillings. At Widcombe Dental we pride ourselves on offering composite (white) fillings as standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Composite Filling?

Composite fillings and restorations are the safest, most biocompatible and conservative way of restoring decayed, fractured and/or worn teeth, returning the tooth back to health, and function as well as providing a highly aesthetic appearance.

Where a large filling is required, an inlay or onlay may provide a better solution.

What are the benefits of Composite Fillings?
  • Composite fillings blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, making them virtually invisible.
  • The resin material in composite creates a strong bond with your tooth resulting in reduced drilling and preserving more of your natural tooth.
  • They are durable and can withstand moderate pressure and usage.
  • Composite can also be used to handle other cosmetic alterations, such as changing the colour or shape of your teeth.

How long will a composite restoration last?

Composite restoration longevity is dependent upon the extent of the decay present at the beginning.  Filled teeth are at a greater risk of cracking and fractures, and dependent upon your lifestyle the tooth can experience further decay.

We guarantee our composite restorations for 12 months.  Filled teeth will sometimes go on to require more comprehensive treatment such as Inlays, onlays, or crowns.

The main risk of a composite restoration is that the tooth fails to cope with the trauma of the treatment, and becomes sensitive or painful requiring a crown or RCT.
