Adding a stainless steel crown as part of your child’s dental care is a long-lasting and pain-free solution to protecting your child’s decaying baby teeth. This type of dental crown helps them to enjoy day-to-day life without the fear of pain from damaged teeth, while also ensuring their adult teeth have the appropriate room to grow.
This is a pain-free treatment, which helps to keep the existing baby tooth in place and will help to guide the adult tooth when it makes its way through.
Adding a stainless steel crown to your child’s baby tooth is a simple procedure to help prevent dental phobia/anxiety, and prevent tooth decay from progressing. If your dentist catches baby tooth decay early, it can prevent the tooth from becoming painful.
In this guide, our highly experienced dental team will be covering the benefits of children’s stainless steel crowns, and how they are fitted.

A stainless steel crown is similar to a dental crown in that it is fitted to completely encase the decaying tooth, protecting it from further damage. While also keeping the tooth in place and helping maintain the natural spacing of teeth. As well as guiding the adult tooth to move into the correct space, when that time comes (some adult molars don’t appear until children are aged 13).
The stainless steel crown is made using stainless steel and also contains nickel and chrome, giving it long-lasting, durable and clean appearance.
Children’s stainless steel crowns will fall out naturally when the adult tooth below erupts and won’t cause any issue to the formation of new adult teeth; they will help guide and protect the space where the tooth will need to arrive.
Some children benefit from having a stainless steel crown added as part of their dental treatment. Not only do they help with dental hygiene, but they also help to protect teeth with:

Baby tooth fillings are often not as effective as fillings on adult teeth, as they will often fall out prematurely.Whereas having a dental crown fitted is a long-lasting and effective way to protect the baby tooth from further decay.
At Widcombe Dental, when it comes to children’s dental treatment, we want to make sure that we are always working to create the right outcome for each patient and to reduce the risk of dental phobia, especially in children. Having a phobia of the dentist could negatively impact their dental health as they grow, due to being fearful and not attending the dentist regularly for checkups and/or treatments.
Other benefits include:
Stainless steel crowns are 95% effective and will usually stay in place until the tooth naturally falls out Making them a great treatment alternative to other fillings or preventive treatments available.

At Widcombe Dental, our expert dentists will complete the fitting of your child’s stainless steel crown in two appointments. During the first appointment, two spacers will be placed on either side of the treated tooth to help create room for the crown, preventing the need for drilling to create space.
At the second appointment the correct sized crown is selected and placed over the tooth. This isolates the bacteria and stops them from being able to feed on food trapped in the tooth and halts the decay.
If a tooth has had to have a small filling because the child is experiencing pain, our team will still place a stainless steel crown on top. The crown negates this problem preventing further need for treatment from additional decay or replacing the filling before the tooth falls out naturally.
