Dental Crown For Missing Tooth & Decay
Using dental crowns and expert dental treatment techniques, Dr Paul Vivian transformed a severely broken and decayed tooth, restoring its functionality and appearance.
The patient who came to our Bath dental practice was suffering from sensitivity and lack of confidence due to their lateral incisor having been severely broken, resulting in decay. Following the initial dental exam, it was clear that the issue with the teeth needed to be addressed to ensure the patient achieved less discomfort and gained full use of their teeth again.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay usually occurs when acid, which can be produced from plaque build-up on your teeth, can erode your tooth enamel, causing dental cavities. In most cases, these cavities can be filled using composite fillings. However, in this case, as the tooth had been severely broken, a composite filling would not suffice.

- Consuming excessive amounts of sugar in snack or drink form
- Not getting enough fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral which helps prevent cavities
- Dry mouth, which is caused by a lack of saliva in your mouth, saliva helps to prevent tooth decay by washing away food and plaque from your teeth
How Did Dr Vivian Help This Case?
In this case, it wasn’t a simple tooth decay issue that Dr Paul Vivian was met with. The patient was not only suffering from tooth decay but also from a severely broken tooth, which was contributing to the issue.
A dental crown, which is a carefully fitted sleeve that will sit over the remaining part of the tooth will help protect it from further damage and improve the overall appearance of the patient’s smile.
Made from Emax, the dental crowns can be bonded directly to the tooth to give a seamless and natural appearance. Dr Paul Vivian restored the damaged tooth to its former glory, leaving them with a healthier and beautiful smile, without tooth pain.
How did the treatment go?
Before we could fit the dental crown, Dr Paul Vivian first had to expose the underlying issues with the tooth.
By cleaning and removing any plaque and debris from the site, he then had a clean starting point to prepare the tooth. An intra-oral 3D scan was performed during the Crown Preparation appointment which is then sent to the dental laboratory. Two weeks later a skillfully crafted crown is ready to be bonded to the remaining surfaces of the tooth. During this appointment, the crown is also colour-matched to the existing teeth, for a seamless appearance
