Detecting & Improving Tooth Decay

The patient who came to our Bath dental practice was suffering from sensitivity in their molar. Following the initial consultation, it was clear that the issue with the teeth needed to be addressed to protect the tooth from further decay.
As it was the start of early onset decay, Dr Sonia Manikam was able to pick up on it quickly, thanks to the patient coming in for regular dental hygienist treatments and X-rays.
What Causes Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay typically occurs when acids produced from plaque build-up on your teeth erode the tooth enamel, leading to dental cavities. In most instances, these cavities can be repaired with composite fillings.
- Causes of tooth decay include:
- Inadequate tooth cleaning
- Consuming excessive sugar in snacks or drinks
- Insufficient fluoride intake; fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps prevent cavities
- Dry mouth, a condition caused by a lack of saliva. Saliva helps prevent tooth decay by washing away food particles and plaque.
How Did A Composite Filling Help?
As enamel cannot repair itself once damaged, we needed to be able to prevent further decay and damage to the tooth with our composite filling process.
We used the tooth-coloured filling to replace the missing enamel and helped to protect the exposed sections of the tooth. The new composite fillings were then colour-matched to the tooth, giving you a natural look and a seamless tooth appearance.
How did the treatment go?
Before Dr Sonia Manikam could repair the missing enamel on the affected teeth, she first had to ensure the area was clean and free of any plaque or tartar build-up. With our dental hygienist treatment, we were able to ensure the teeth were clean and prepared for the composite filling.
The preparation of a cavity before the placement of a composite filling is to ensure the tooth is free from carious lesions by cleaning the cavity with dental requirements and materials. Once the tooth is sculpted and freed from decay, it is ready for filling. Great care was taken to ensure the patient was as comfortable as possible throughout.
